Mesi's Thoughts

“I am grateful to the Creator that I can be a child of two cultures so far apart at the same time.”

“Perhaps this is precisely why I am deeply interested in bringing people and groups of people closer together, in bridging the gaps. Music and folk songs have given me a key to myself and to others since my early childhood.”

“Through them, I connect to the vast flow of cultures that condenses centuries and millennia, and the gap between us seems to narrow.”

“I am interested in all forms of creation, which is why, alongside folk songs, I have consciously started moving towards my own lyrics and melodies (Átváltozás album, 2020).”

“During 20 years of singing folk songs, I have let countless folk music motifs and forms pass through me, which in the present either take on an authentic form or find a home in the musical fabric of my own songs.”

Productions

„I always draw strength from the fruits of your work. I listen to your music on a daily basis, and it recharges me in my everyday life.”

Mesi Guessous performance

People. Destinies. Cultures.

The productions are staged in the form of album release concerts or as a selection of songs tailored to the specific occasion.

Depending on the invitation, they perform as a duo, trio, quartet, up to seven people. The musical world of their formation bridges distant cultures and human stories on the wings of melodies.

They also gladly perform in social institutions, considering it their mission to share the healing and connecting power of music.

Szivárványhíd

„My first album was released in November 2011, with which I invite the dear Listener on an inner journey. The song cradles a child, then this child grows up, looks for a partner, falls in love, gets married, matures in soul, and returns to their Creator.

During our exciting folk music journey, we can discover the musical and thematic parallels between Hungarian and Turkish folk songs. Moroccan folk music can also be heard on the album, which is a bud waiting to bloom in my heart...” (Guessous Mesi)

ÖröMes

A child is naturally cheerful and playful. „My inner child”, what do you whisper? Joy, magic, play, wisdom... the joy of closeness to Nature and the Creator, the joy of the lover, the joy after a concert, the happiness of being together with friends; playing with words, colors, songs, with each other and with ourselves.

After Szivárványhíd, ÖröMes is truly the next stage of my life. It is a very cozy, warm world for me. Hungarian, Turkish, and Moroccan folk music can be heard together on the album.

Meshinda – Áradó Boszporusz

The ensemble was formed in 2013, and its two founding members, singer Guessous Majda Mária and sitar player Tóth Szabolcs, first met within the walls of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. The musical world of the ensemble is enriched with beautiful authentic folk instruments by two musicians: Barvich Iván and Boros Gerzson Dávid.

Like Mesi, all members of the ensemble have a special connection to cultures outside of Hungary. Sitar player Szabi Tóth also contributes to the team's work as an award-winning songwriter.

Meshinda is a unique musical experience combining Hungarian, Turkish, Hindi, and Moroccan folk music traditions. The album draws inspiration from the flowing currents of the Istanbul Bosphorus, symbolizing the musical meeting of different cultures.

Átváltozás

Mesi's fourth album was released under the care of Tom-Tom Records in the winter of 2020, titled 'Átváltozás – Songs & Destinies'.

The album is the result of an innovative artistic-social initiative, turning the destinies of disadvantaged people into songs in the light of positive change.

The valuable inner thoughts of marginalized children and adults who view their lives positively become music through the interpretation of Mesi and her musicians. Various social institutions joined the initiative.

Mesi also presented the concept of the album at the TEDxYouth@Budapest conference.

Tőlem-Neked

TŐLEM-NEKED in two languages 10 WELL-KNOWN HUNGARIAN AND TURKISH FOLK SONGS

„…one can only truly understand a folk song if one understands the language of the lyrics.” (Béla Bartók)

Mesi's first solo album is primarily addressed to native Hungarian and Turkish speakers, who 'introduce themselves' to each other through two different arrangements of 10 well-known folk songs. Both nations can listen to the songs in their own native language alongside the original language, or vice versa.

Biography

Guessous Majda Mária „Meshi” is a Hungarian-Moroccan singer and songwriter with five albums.

In 2011, her work was recognized with the Junior Prima Award. She is a TEDx speaker (2017), an artist-teacher of the MUS-E program, and was a guest lecturer at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music for 7 years.

Born in Debrecen, the creative artist was surrounded by Hungarian folk songs and the Arab musical world as her natural environment during childhood. Later, this parallelism laid the foundation for her creative work, musical thinking, and openness to musical traditions beyond Hungarian folk music.

Her musical world is unique; in her song compilations, the folk music and lyrical content of different cultures intertwine. Béla Bartók's concept of 'peoples becoming brothers' is particularly important to her, a philosophy she sincerely conveys through her music.

First Steps

She gave her first solo concert at the age of 18 in her hometown of Debrecen, which, in addition to folk songs, also featured the worlds of jazz, musicals, and popular music.

Academy of Music

She was admitted to the historic first class of the Folk Music Department at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, where she graduated in 2012 as a folk singing performer and teacher.
